Gynecologic Ultrasound

Gynecologic Sonogram:

A gynecologic ultrasound is often used to image the female reproductive organs to evaluate their size, shape, and consistency. The most common indications for gynecologic ultrasound are ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, infertility, and to check for pelvic masses like fibroids.

Some of the conditions that a gynecologic ultrasound can detect are ovarian cysts, uterine and ovarian tumors, and ruptured cysts. The size and consistency of these masses can help your physician decide a treatment plan for you.

This test is an imaging test which is done typically using a vaginal ultrasound probe. The reason for this type of exam to be performed internally is that the closer the probe is to the anatomy of interest, the clearer the images are. So, rather than a patient filling their bladders and placing a probe on the abdomen, the probe is gently placed in the vagina and steered to view the pelvic anatomy. Since the sound waves which create the images do not have to project through the patient's skin, fat, muscle, and full bladder, the sound waves have not been degraded. In some instances, both an abdominal and vaginal pelvic ultrasound are performed to evaluate a larger mass.

Ultrasound for Infertility:

An ultrasound for infertility is an examination which can identify pelvic conditions that could prevent conception. These can include polycystic ovarian disease, fibroid, signs of hormonal imbalance, pelvic masses, endometriosis, and uterine anomalies. This examination is typically performed vaginally for the greatest clarity of imaging and accurate measurements.

Ultrasound examinations for infertility is commonly used for patients undergoing fertility treatment that include medical stimulation in preparation for artificial insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). This exam will identify how effective medical stimulation of the ovaries is progressing, and insure optimal stimulation. During this examination, the ovarian follicles and endometrial lining are measured, and the total number of follicles are documented. Further information may be requested by the overseeing physician and will also be evaluated and included in the final report.
